EssexI have been teaching journalism for more than 30 years. I am currently a staff lecturer at the University of Essex on its BA Multimedia Journalism, currently in its third year.

2014-, Lecturer, University of Essex
I am a staff member on the BA Multimedia Journalism programme. The course started in autumn 2015: I am currently teaching reporting, subediting, print and online production, history of journalism and feature-writing, as well as supervising various practical projects with local media outlets.

2011-, Visiting fellow, University Campus Suffolk
I co-devised an MA Journalism course for University Campus Suffolk with Tim Fenton of the BBC, which I taught between 2012 and 2014.

2012-14, Lecturer, Brunel University London
I taught history of journalism to undergraduates and international institutions to postgraduates, and mentored final-year undergraduates on work experience as a visiting lecturer, working on the BA Journalism programmes run by Sarah Niblock, Murray Dick and Rachel Sharp and the MA International Journalism programme run by Paul Lashmar

2000-12 Lecturer, City University London
I was a staff lecturer in the City department of journalism 2000-11, working full-time 2003-11, then worked 2011-12 as a visiting lecturer. I was course director of the BA Journalism and a Social Science programme from 2003 to 2011 and of the BA Journalism programme (which I co-devised with Anna McKane) 2006-10. While on the staff I taught a wide variety of academic and practical modules to undergraduates (history of journalism, public administration, ethics, reporting, feature-writing, subediting, print and online production) as well as taking postgraduate public administration and print production modules. I left staff in 2011 but returned in in 2011-12 to teach history of journalism to undergraduates.

2000-01: Lecturer, University of Westminster
I taught political journalism and public administration to postgraduate magazine journalism students, working one morning a week on the MA Magazine Journalism programme run by Chris Horrie.

1998- 2000: Lecturer, London College of Printing
I taught production and news to undergraduate journalism students, working on the BA and HND Journalism  programmes run by Paul Charman, Kathy Hilton, Chris Horrie and Sarah Niblock.

1997-99: Lecturer, Hoxton Bibliotech
I devised a BTec electronic publishing course and taught on it.

1989-91: Lecturer, Goldsmiths College
I ran the journalism element of Goldsmiths’ Communications BA courses, working on modules run by Ivor Gaber.

1989-93: Lecturer, Hackney College
I devised Hackney’s journalism access course and taught on it.

1987-89: Lecturer, London College of Printing
I taught one day a week on a short-lived journalism access course.
